What is the Foundation for National Progress?
The mission of the Foundation for National Progress (FNP) is to produce revelatory journalism that in its power and reach seeks to inform and inspire a more just and democratic world.
We measure the effectiveness of our public-interest reporting in three ways:
- The size and nature of our audience
(our audience is extraordinarily activist) - The seeding of stories for the broader press
(any one investigation will reach over a million people throughout
the country through our media outreach) - The use of our investigations by people working for social justice
(we work directly with politicians, educators, advocates and social change organizations)
The Foundation for National Progress was established in 1975. The FNP publishes Mother Jones magazine, MotherJones.com, and directs the Mother Jones Investigative Reporting Internship Program.
Our independent investigative reporting is made possible by readers like you.
Who was Mother Jones?
Mary Harris "Mother" Jones was a feisty labor activist who died in 1930. She became an activist after losing her family to a yellow fever epidemic and her sewing business to the great Chicago fire. Known as the "miners' angel," she worked extensively on behalf of coal miners, but was also a staunch and effective opponent of child labor.
